Internet Speed Test

Download and upload throughput, latency and jitter, measured against this server. Nothing runs until you start it.

This test may use significant bandwidth. It downloads and uploads a large amount of data to measure your throughput. Do not run it on a metered connection unless you intend to.

How this works

Download is measured by streaming a large response and sampling the bytes as they arrive. Upload is measured by posting random data so that compression cannot inflate the result. Latency and jitter come from timed round trips.

Input

  • Explicit user action to start

Output

  • Download throughput in Mbps
  • Upload throughput in Mbps
  • Latency in milliseconds
  • Jitter in milliseconds

Privacy

This test moves data between your browser and this server only. It does not run automatically and never starts without you pressing the button. No result is stored.

Limitations

  • Throughput is measured against this server, so it reflects the server as well as your connection.
  • Browsers do not expose upload progress, so the upload figure is total bytes over total time.
  • Results vary with network conditions, other traffic on your connection, and server load.
  • This is not comparable to a dedicated speed-test network with many geographically distributed servers.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the test not start automatically?

A speed test can consume a large amount of bandwidth. Starting it without your action could be costly on a metered connection, so it waits for you.

How much data does it use?

It is capped per direction. The download test stops at a fixed byte limit or a fixed time limit, whichever comes first.

Is the result saved?

No. Nothing is stored on the server and no history is kept.

Why is my result lower than my provider advertises?

Throughput to a single server is limited by that server, the path between you, and any congestion. A single-server test is a lower bound, not a measurement of your line rate.
